One of the best tools offered by Parenting by Connection is Listening Time – this is a tool that us adults need whether we realize it or not.
I have realized that there is really nothing better than to have a friend or a very supportive person listen to me as I cry, whine and offload all the feelings that have accumulated, not only in times of crisis, such as when my children get ill or there is disharmony in the family but in our day to day life as well.
We can try writing down our thoughts in a journal or even talk to ourselves but to really offload those feelings and reconnect there is nothing better than to have another supportive person just to be there and listen without judgement or advice.
I dare you to try it.
See how you feel afterwards. I bet you will have a new sense of clarity and focus.
The other day I was so off track and upset as my toddler had fallen ill that it took me six attempts to leave the house. I kept having to run back inside as I forgot my keys, then my bag, then snacks for my boys etc. While I was running back and forward it was then I realized how off track I was and what I needed to do to fix it. It wasn’t until I got some listening time that I notice a huge difference on how I was feeling and my sense of clarify.
I felt calm and completed connected as soon as I hung up the phone. Thank you to my special listening partner that day for allowing me the space to vent and cry.
